Researchers from the University of Queensland and UNSW have developed the 'Paraborg,' a cyborg cockroach equipped with cameras and remote-controlled injection devices. Embedded electrodes allow operators to steer the insects through rubble and administer medication to disaster victims.

A joint research team from the University of Queensland (UQ) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has created the 'Paraborg,' a cyborg cockroach designed to assist in disaster response. Published in the journal Advanced Science, the study outlines two variants: one fitted with a camera to assess victim conditions, and another with an automatic syringe mechanism to deliver medication remotely.

The researchers used giant burrowing cockroaches native to northern Queensland, which measure up to 87 mm in length and weigh up to 40 grams. Electrodes were embedded in each insect's antennae and cerci — rear sensory organs — allowing remote control of both direction and walking speed via electrical stimuli between 10 and 40 hertz. Frequencies above 50 hertz were found to lose effectiveness over time.

The injection device uses a spring-loaded syringe triggered by a citric acid and baking soda reaction, generating enough CO₂ to depress the plunger. The full apparatus added approximately 15 mm in height and 17 grams in weight — within the cockroach's carrying capacity of 1.5 times its body weight — without significantly impairing movement.

In testing, a Paraborg was remotely navigated through three checkpoints to successfully administer an injection to a simulated target. 'Cyborg insects have been designed for search and explore missions for the past couple of decades,' said UQ bio-robotics researcher Tan Vo Doan. 'We wanted to take the next step.'
