Thea Energy announced Monday that it has received a $20 million award from ARPA-E, the Department of Energy's advanced research arm, to support the manufacturing of its modular high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. These magnets are critical components in magnetic confinement fusion reactors, where powerful magnetic fields contain and compress plasma until nuclear fusion occurs and large amounts of energy are released.

Thea's reactor is based on a stellarator design — a configuration that typically requires complex, custom-shaped magnets to confine plasma. To reduce manufacturing costs, Thea uses a simplified approach: 12 large magnets built from just four templates, and more than 300 smaller, identical magnets arranged around the reactor's periphery, similar to pixels on a display. The smaller magnets are controlled by software, which the company says enables more forgiving construction tolerances and lower overall costs.

Thea Energy is one of the best-funded fusion startups, having raised $100 million in May 2026 in addition to a $20 million Series A in 2024. The company aims to build a commercial-scale fusion power plant in the mid-2040s.
