The U.S. Department of Defense has added OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government to its GenAI.mil portal, giving 3 million civilian and military personnel secure access to generative AI tools tailored for warfighter needs, with 1.7 million users already onboarded.
The Pentagon has officially launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government as part of GenAI.mil, a centralized secure portal introduced last year. GenAI.mil initially offered Google Gemini and is designed to provide Department of Defense employees with access to commercial frontier AI models while preventing sensitive government data from passing through standard consumer channels. The platform has already attracted more than 1.7 million unique users out of the department's 3 million total personnel. ChatGPT Mil, developed under OpenAI's OpenAI for Government program, supports chat, file management, projects, and custom GPTs, with a focus on unclassified administrative tasks such as logistics, planning, and policy work. Grok for Government is delivered through SpaceX's Starshield AI secure satellite network and is positioned for broader military applications, including mission execution, market research for acquisition, and supply-chain management. Notably, Anthropic's Claude is absent from the portal following a dispute in which the Trump administration labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after it refused to grant the Pentagon unrestricted AI access and insisted on safety guardrails — a designation Anthropic is currently challenging in court. The Pentagon has also struck AI-related agreements with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
