Despite these accomplishments, the team concluded that continuing was unsustainable. Recruitment proved untenable, with only one person actively applying in response to an open call for new members. The team also cited persistent governance friction with the NixOS Steering Committee (SC), describing issues including micromanagement, poor communication, lack of clarity on SC-member positions, and insufficient delegation of authority. The team stated the SC "lacks a native instinct for the delegation envisioned by the constitution" and does not function effectively as either a delegated backstop or a proactive decision-making body.
These structural problems led to inadequate coordination on initiatives such as GSoC, grants, and AI policy, as well as slow progress on moderation and GitHub org reform. With a Steering Committee election imminent, the team opted for transparency about the circumstances driving dissolution, hoping to inform future governance efforts.
