Defcon 34's official badge, revealed exclusively by WIRED, was created by renowned hardware hacker Andrew 'bunnie' Huang and centers on the Baochip-1x, a 'mostly' open source microcontroller. Huang published the chip's OS, firmware, processor core, cryptographic engines, and I/O system on GitHub for public inspection. Unlike conventional chips encased in opaque plastic — including earlier open source chips — the Baochip uses packaging that allows infrared light to pass through the silicon from behind, enabling visual verification of internal circuitry. This addresses a longstanding supply-chain trust problem: buyers previously had no way to confirm a chip matched its published specifications after manufacturing. The badge's core module is physically removable and can continue to be used post-conference as a standalone hardware security token. Huang told WIRED the chip represents years of work toward a goal of 'a chip that we can trust down to the very core, down to the transistor.' He plans to demonstrate infrared inspection live at the conference, letting attendees examine the chip themselves. The project has been three years in development.
