Forterra's Autonomous ATVs Combat-Tested in Ukraine

Why This Matters

Marks a significant real-world milestone for US autonomous ground vehicle technology validated under active combat conditions.

US autonomous vehicle company Forterra revealed on July 7, 2026 that over 100 of its self-driving Lancer ATVs have been deployed in Ukraine for nine months, completing 1,100+ missions and carrying 777,440 lbs of cargo — the largest US defense tech autonomous ground vehicle deployment in combat.

Forterra, a US-based autonomous vehicle manufacturer, disclosed that more than 100 of its Lancer autonomous ground vehicles (UGVs) have been operating in Ukrainian conflict zones since October 2025. The company describes this as the largest combat deployment of autonomous ground vehicles by any US defense technology firm, funded by US defense dollars.

The Lancer vehicles are based on Polaris ATVs, equipped with a custom sensor and compute stack, and are gas-powered with a 750 kg cargo capacity — three times that of typical Ukrainian-built battery-powered UGVs. A key modification enabling field success was the addition of a Starlink satellite internet antenna.

Over their nine months of deployment, the vehicles have driven more than 2,500 miles across 1,100+ missions, transported 777,440 pounds of cargo, and completed 52 casualty evacuations. Some units have been lost in combat, particularly when immobilized in deep mud and exposed to Russian drone or artillery strikes.

Sgt. Maj. Corey Wilkens of the US Army noted that aerial drone surveillance has created extreme vulnerability for soldiers in open terrain, driving demand for ground-based autonomous logistics. A Ukrainian soldier quoted by TechCrunch called the Lancer 'the most important UGV in Ukraine' for logistics and defense sustainment.
