Dune: A 3-Key USB-C Keypad for Context-Aware Mac Shortcuts

Original: The Dune keypad device can be your meeting controller and more

Why This Matters

Context-aware physical input devices represent a growing niche in productivity hardware for remote and hybrid work environments.

Project Mirage has launched Dune, a $119 three-key aluminum keypad for MacBook that automatically changes its button functions based on the active app, supporting meeting controls, spreadsheet commands, browser shortcuts, and custom Python or Claude-powered scripts.

Project Mirage's Dune is a compact, three-key aluminum keypad roughly the size of a stick of gum that plugs directly into a MacBook's USB-C port. Priced at $119, it draws power from the laptop itself, requiring no battery or separate charger. Each unit is built to fit a specific Mac model flush against the chassis, though a dongle connection is also supported. Compatible models include M2 Air or later and M1 Pro or later, running macOS 15 Sequoia or newer.

Dune's core feature is context-aware key mapping: in meeting apps, the three buttons can toggle mic, toggle video, and bring the window to the front; in Excel or Google Sheets, they can copy, paste, and undo; in Chrome, they can refresh, jump to the URL bar, or paste. Developers can configure the device for VS Code or GitHub workflows such as merging or closing pull requests.

A companion app handles shortcut configuration per app or system-wide. It also syncs with the user's calendar to surface upcoming meetings and offer one-tap join, dismiss, or late-arrival messages. For advanced use, users can run custom Python scripts or describe desired shortcuts in plain language via Claude Desktop integration, which then writes and assigns the script automatically. A shortcut marketplace is also included in the app.

One noted drawback: the keys require minimal force to press, making accidental inputs easy during casual desk movements.
