Frontier labs broadly argue that open source AI models are dangerous, should be controlled by responsible gatekeepers, and limited to trusted — meaning paying — users.
Critics of this position point out that open source software is already the foundational layer of virtually all commercial software, including the frontier models themselves. Commercial actors routinely cooperate on commoditized lower layers of the software stack while competing on differentiating higher layers. Frontier labs simply prefer AI models not become commoditized.
Historical precedent also undermines the suppression argument.
