AI Credit Resale Economy: Token Brokers Emerge as Underground Market

Original: The AI Credit Resale Economy

Why This Matters

The emergence of a gray market for AI credits signals growing security and compliance risks for major AI providers.

A gray market for discounted AI API credits has emerged, with brokers buying unused startup credits and reselling them at 30–80% below list price. Marketplaces like AI Credits and AICreditMart, plus Telegram channels and Reddit posts, facilitate trades. One seller offered $100,000 in daily spend capacity.

Security researcher Matt Lenhard at Vectoral has documented the rise of a commercialized market for reselling AI API credits, following up on his earlier reporting on the token relay market. Founders reported receiving unsolicited offers to buy or sell off-market inference credits — particularly for Anthropic — at steep discounts. After sourcing broker email addresses from contacts, Lenhard made direct contact with one seller offering $100,000 in AI spend per day, operating as a proxy that routes requests through a pool of provider API keys rather than handing keys over directly. Several dedicated marketplaces have appeared: AI Credits and AICreditMart list credits from major cloud and inference providers at 30–80% off list price. CheapCredits markets a flat 40% discount across all models, claiming bulk purchasing as the source, though Lenhard is skeptical, noting that such discounts are 'very unlikely unless you are one of the provider's top customers.' CheapCredits also provides a GDPR-compliant Data Processing Agreement. Activity also appears on Telegram channels and Reddit communities such as r/saasforsale and r/indiehackers. Lenhard estimates tens of millions of dollars in credits are actively being offered across these channels, describing tokens as having become a 'pseudo-currency' with meaningful market liquidity.
