1X Neo Robot Unveils High-Dexterity Five-Finger Hands

Why This Matters
Advances in dexterous robot hands are a key milestone in making humanoid home robots commercially viable.
Norwegian-American robotics firm 1X revealed new five-finger hands for its Neo home robot on July 9, 2026. The hands feature 25 degrees of freedom, IP68 waterproofing, and tendon-inspired actuators, enabling gripping, slip detection, and self-charging. Neo is priced at $20,000 or $500/month.
1X, a Norwegian-American robotics company, has revealed details about the hands on its Neo home robot. The five-finger hands use tendon-inspired actuators to achieve 25 degrees of freedom — close to the 27 degrees found in human hands. Cameras and AI assist with object recognition and contextual gripping. The fingers can detect slip, move rapidly, hyperextend beyond human range, and carry an IP68 waterproof rating, allowing Neo to wash its own hands.
Jonathan Terfurth, 1X's director of actuators and hands, stated the range of motion may slightly exceed human capability, enabling Neo to open doors, lift heavy objects, and plug itself in when its battery is low. "You want to be able to operate with a human who has never worked or interfaced with a robot, and you still want it to be safe and compliant and soft," he said.
Unlike industrial humanoid robots targeting defense contracts, Neo is designed as a soft, approachable home companion inspired by Baymax from Big Hero 6. It is available in limited early-access quantities at $20,000 as a lump sum or $500 per month, with lump-sum buyers prioritized for 2026 delivery. Neo currently supports partial teleoperation via a feature called Expert Mode, with full autonomy listed as a long-term goal.
