Spotify Eyes AI Agents as Its Next Growth Channel

Original: Spotify’s current AI bet is about being the music service that agents choose

Why This Matters

Agent-native distribution could reshape how 788M users discover and access media.

Spotify hit 788M monthly active users and ~€5B revenue in Q3 2026. Co-CEO Söderström says AI agents will send listeners to Spotify, not replace it — and the company is already integrated with ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta's Muse.

Spotify posted a strong Q3 2026, reporting 788 million monthly active users and nearly €5 billion (~$5.6B USD) in revenue. But the earnings call's bigger story was Co-CEO Gustav Söderström's argument that the rise of AI agents is a structural tailwind, not a threat, for music streaming.

Söderström's logic: agents are good at eliminating chores, but entertainment isn't a chore people want eliminated. "Nobody asks an agent to 'summarize a song' for them," he told investors. Instead, Spotify wants agents to act as the on-ramp — users ask an assistant to queue workout music or find a podcast, and the agent routes that request through Spotify.

To get there, Spotify was the first music service to integrate with Meta's Muse, and it already connects with ChatGPT and Claude. Söderström framed Spotify itself as "an intelligent media service encapsulated as an agent" that users can talk to rather than just tap through. He claimed the platform can personalize experiences in ways no other media service currently can — citing an example of retrospectively curating a listening history back to 2008 and adjusting tempo.

Not every platform is playing along. Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse from shopping on its platform, signaling that big players may wall off agents selectively when access or revenue control is at stake. Spotify, at least for now, is betting on openness.
