Spotify adds paid podcast memberships in 34 markets
Original: Spotify launches paid podcast memberships with perks beyond bonus content
Why This Matters
Spotify's 90% revenue share directly challenges YouTube and Patreon for creator loyalty.
Spotify launched paid podcast memberships on Oct. 20, rolling out to 34 markets. Creators keep 90% of revenue and can bundle perks like bonus content, fewer ads, and early access across multiple pricing tiers.
Spotify's new paid memberships give podcast creators a revenue stream beyond ads and occasional bonus episodes. Creators set their own pricing tiers and choose perks — bonus audio or video, ad reduction, early access, or combinations thereof — with Spotify taking a 10% cut. The feature first appeared at Spotify's May Investor Day alongside AI listening tools and sponsorship management features.
To qualify, creators must host on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, log at least 100 consumption hours, 100 listeners or viewers, and have published a minimum of three episodes. Purchases happen on the web, not via in-app transactions — a detail that sidesteps Apple and Google's 30% platform fees.
Launch partners include "Making Sense with Sam Harris," "Shawn Ryan Show," "The Adam Friedland Show," "Two Hot Takes," and YMH Studios, which is activating memberships across 12 shows at once. Spotify says membership badges and welcome clips are coming soon. The move is part of a broader push to attract creators away from YouTube as Spotify deepens its video offering.
