macOS has required users to manually install apps via DMG files since Mac OS X launched in 2001 — a process involving mounting a virtual disk, dragging the app to the Applications folder, unmounting the disk, and deleting the DMG. Developer Jeff Schumann built EasyDMG to eliminate this workflow entirely. The free app, which features a hamster mascot and the tagline 'Created out of spite,' replaces the default DMG handler on macOS. Once set as the default, EasyDMG automatically mounts the disk image, verifies the app, installs it to the Applications folder, deletes the DMG file, and opens a Finder window showing the result — all triggered by a simple double-click. The app runs only when a DMG is opened and closes itself upon completion. It includes no telemetry and makes no network requests beyond update checks.
