Netherlands launches open-source code platform for government
Original: Soft launch of open-source code platform for government
Why This Matters
Represents significant government commitment to digital sovereignty and open-source software development
The Netherlands has soft-launched code.overheid.nl, a government-wide platform for publishing and developing open-source software. The self-hosted platform uses Forgejo as a sovereign alternative to GitHub and GitLab, currently in pilot phase with limited access for government organizations.
The Dutch government has launched code.overheid.nl, a centralized platform for government bodies to publish and develop open-source software. The platform is fully self-hosted to support digital sovereignty and uses Forgejo, an open-source European alternative to GitHub and GitLab. Currently in pilot phase, not all government organizations have access yet. The initiative is led by the Open Source Program Office at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK), collaborating with DAWO (SSC-ICT), Opensourcewerken, and developer.overheid.nl. Developers are invited to contribute with the goal of growing it into a shared Git platform for all government bodies. Interested parties can contact codeplatform@rijksoverheid.nl for participation.
