Major test for EV startup market as Slate attempts to deliver affordable electric vehicles

Electric vehicle startup Slate Auto will announce pricing and begin taking $300 non-refundable preorders for its low-cost EV on June 24, with first deliveries planned for late this year. The company has 160,000 reservations.

Slate Auto, backed by Jeff Bezos and LA Dodgers owner Mark Walter, sent emails to prospective buyers encouraging $50 reservations ahead of $300 preorders starting June 24. The startup emerged from stealth in April 2025, promising a convertible vehicle that transforms from two-seater truck to five-seater SUV. Originally targeting under $20,000 with federal tax credits, pricing shifted to mid-$20,000 range after credits were eliminated. The company has 160,000 reservations and raised $1.4 billion total, including a $650 million Series C round in April. Former Amazon executive Peter Faricy was named CEO in March to help convert reservations to actual sales.
