OmniDiff: Content-Aware Git Difftool in Rust

Original: Show HN: OmniDiff – Opensource, super fast, content aware Git difftool, in Rust

Why This Matters

Structural, type-aware diffing can materially improve code review quality at scale.

Developer ivankovic released OmniDiff, an open-source Git difftool written in Rust that handles 99.95% of code changes, uses content-specific diff algorithms in 98.8% of cases, and runs in under 100ms.

OmniDiff is a fast, open-source Git difftool built in Rust that goes beyond line-based diffing by applying content-aware algorithms depending on file type. The tool claims to handle 99.95% of code changes and uses content-specific diffing—AST-level structural diff for source code, plus specialized handling for images, fonts, archives, PDFs, and message catalogs—in 98.8% of cases.

Performance benchmarks run on a Lenovo T14s with an Intel Core i7-1370P and 32 GB RAM show sub-100ms diffs in most cases. Accuracy scores (measured against a judged test suite) are notably high: code hits 98%, pictures 96%, and cursors and message catalogs both reach 100%. The project uses the ratatui TUI library for its terminal interface and has gathered 303 GitHub stars since launch.

The repo ships with commercial and open-source licenses, a contributing guide, and pre-packaged Nix flake support. It integrates directly as a Git difftool replacement and is backed by a research directory suggesting the author evaluated multiple diffing approaches before settling on the current implementation.
