HackerTV: HN-recommended YouTube as live TV

Original: Show HN: HackerTV – HN's most-recommended Youtube videos as 24/7 TV channels

Why This Matters

Shows how community curation plus LLM labeling can surface niche content collections.

HackerTV.org streams YouTube videos most recommended in Hacker News comments as simulated 24/7 TV channels, with a retro channel-surfing UI, program guide, and synchronized shared viewing.

HackerTV is a side project by Danny Salzman that turns Hacker News' collective video recommendations into a simulated television experience. The site aggregates YouTube links surfaced in HN comments, then broadcasts them as continuous 24/7 channels where all viewers watch the same content simultaneously — the classic broadcast TV model, not on-demand.

The catalog was seeded from HackerTube (licensed ODC-By) and built on the open-index/hacker-news archive. It stays current via weekly pulls from the HN Search API, with filtering done in code and content labeling handled by Claude. The UI leans hard into the retro TV aesthetic: a fake remote control, channel tuning via number keys, a program guide overlay, theater mode, and a 'Please Stand By' card when metadata hasn't loaded yet.

Duration estimates are pulled from YouTube metadata and noted as approximate — some segments may run short or cut off. The project is not affiliated with YouTube, Google, Hacker News, or Y Combinator.
