Shopify opens checkout to browser-based AI agents
Original: Shopify opens checkout to browser-based AI agents
Why This Matters
Shopify is building structured infrastructure for AI-driven commerce at scale, ahead of most retail platforms.
Shopify announced on September 28, 2026 that browser-based AI agents can now complete full purchases on merchant sites via WebMCP support for checkout and Shop Pay, adding three new API tools that let agents read, update, and submit transactions with buyer authorization.
Shopify has extended its WebMCP support to cover the full checkout flow, including Shop Pay, allowing browser-based AI agents to go beyond product search and cart management to actually place orders on behalf of buyers. The update introduces three tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These let agents inspect a checkout page, modify details like shipping address or delivery option, and finalize a transaction once the buyer authorizes it — all without relying on screenshots or HTML scraping.
The move contrasts sharply with Amazon and Adidas, both of which have reportedly moved to block AI agents from completing purchases on their platforms. Shopify's approach leans into structured APIs built on its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which underpins both its hosted MCP server (for server-to-server agent workflows) and WebMCP (for in-browser agents).
Gil Greenberg, Shopify's staff product manager for agentic commerce, announced the rollout on X, noting the tools provide "accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements." AI agents Muse and Instinct already have direct Shopify partnerships; the Instinct deal was announced alongside this update. The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants.
