Shopify launches Canvas, an AI chat-based store builder
Original: Shopify debuts Canvas, a way to build online stores by chatting with AI
Why This Matters
Chat-driven store building could lower the barrier for small sellers who can't afford developers or designers.
Shopify on October 1, 2026 unveiled Canvas, a store-building tool that lets merchants create and edit their Shopify storefront by chatting with AI agent Sidekick. Changes render in real time using actual store code, enabling full interactivity testing across screen sizes. The tool is desktop-only at launch.
Shopify's existing no-code builder let merchants rearrange modular sections and blocks within a chosen theme, but deeper customization still required code or a developer. Canvas changes that by putting Sidekick, the company's AI agent, at the center of the entire site-building workflow. Merchants describe what they want in chat, and the results appear live in Canvas — not a static mockup, but the store's actual rendered code. That distinction matters: merchants can test animations, interactions, and how pages look across different screen sizes before going live. Sidekick also takes screenshots as it works, giving it the same visual context the merchant sees. Technically, Shopify simplified the underlying theme architecture and gave Sidekick direct access to theme files, making it easier for the AI to understand and modify the store's structure, logic, and design. The existing Sidekick had already been used for coding, app-building, and theme edits — Canvas is the first product that wraps all of that into a single, full-store view with pan and zoom. The initial release is limited: third-party themes, app blocks, extensions, translations, markets, and rollouts are not yet supported, and the tool is desktop-only. Shopify says those gaps will close over time. Canvas enters a crowded field that includes Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer, Lovable, and Replit.
