Roblox launches AI-powered 'Build' feature for mobile game creation

Why This Matters

Roblox's AI-driven creation tools signal a major shift in how game development is democratized at platform scale.

Roblox announced on July 16 a new mobile feature called 'Build,' enabling users to generate games from text prompts using AI—no coding required. Public alpha testing begins July 28 in New Zealand for users aged 9 and older, with publishing rights for those 16 and up.

Roblox's new 'Build' feature allows users to create games directly from mobile devices by entering simple text prompts. For instance, typing 'Let's make a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest' generates an initial playable version, which users can then modify and share. According to Roblox, the feature is 'powered by a broad set of AI models, including both open-source and proprietary Roblox models,' and handles gameplay mechanics, environment, characters, visual style, and sound.

Similar AI-powered game-creation tools have been developed by Google, Microsoft, and Tencent. However, concerns persist: the 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry survey found that 52% of game industry professionals believe generative AI is negatively impacting the industry, with critics warning of low-quality and repetitive content flooding platforms.

To counter this, Roblox will rank AI-generated games by player retention. 'If no one plays it — no one can find it,' the company stated. A free tier and paid options will be available. Roblox is also developing AI agents for playtesting and analytics, a scene-generation model for full 3D environments, and has an existing AI foundation model for 3D asset generation.
