Why This Matters

Represents potential shift toward space-based AI infrastructure despite current cost challenges

Google and SpaceX are discussing launching orbital data centers in space, according to Wall Street Journal sources. This comes as SpaceX prepares for its $1.75 trillion IPO later this year, with plans to make space the cheapest location for AI compute within the next few years.

The potential partnership follows Anthropic's recent deal with SpaceX to use computing resources from xAI's Memphis data center, with future orbital collaboration possibilities. SpaceX acquired xAI in February. Google is also exploring options with other rocket companies and plans to launch prototype satellites by 2027 under Project Suncatcher. While Musk promotes orbital data centers as cheaper to operate and free from local opposition, current analysis shows terrestrial data centers remain more cost-effective when factoring in satellite construction and launch expenses. Google previously invested $900 million in SpaceX in 2015.
