Instagram will discontinue end-to-end encryption for direct messages on May 8, 2026, according to a quietly updated help page from March. The feature, which protected message contents from sender to receiver including from Meta, has been optional since 2023. Meta spokesperson cited low uptake as the reason, stating "Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs" and directing users to WhatsApp for encrypted messaging. Users affected will receive in-app instructions to download media or messages before the cutoff date. Meta has faced pressure from law enforcement and child safety groups to remove encryption. With access to messages, Meta could potentially use content for advertising algorithms or chatbot training. End-to-end encryption remains opt-in for Facebook Messenger group chats and default for all WhatsApp conversations.
