PostmarketOS renames itself Nura after 18-month process

Original: PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura

Why This Matters

A clean, trademarkable name positions Nura for broader outreach beyond the Linux enthusiast niche.

The Linux-based mobile OS project postmarketOS officially rebranded as Nura on September 27, 2026, announced at the project's own conference. The name derives from Nuraghe, ancient Sardinian stone structures dating to 3000 BC, symbolizing long-term device longevity. A trademark filing is already underway.

After an 18-month selection process drawing over 300 community name submissions, postmarketOS has become Nura. The announcement came during a 'mystery talk' at the project's conference. The new name is short for Nuraghe — massive granite towers built in Sardinia from around 3000 BC, many still standing — chosen to reflect the project's core philosophy of keeping devices useful for as long as possible. The name was originally suggested by community member Davide Depau.

The team cited several practical reasons for dropping 'postmarketOS': the name was long, difficult to pronounce in many languages, and spawned inconsistent spellings (PostMarketOS, PostmarketOS, post-market OS). The lowercase-p-uppercase-OS capitalization added its own confusion. Critically, descriptive names cannot be trademarked — a real concern for a project wanting legal protection against misuse. A trademark for 'Nura' has already been filed.

The project's logo stays unchanged. The new home is nura.eco rather than nura.org because the .org domain owner declined to sell at a reasonable price. The team actually prefers .eco: the domain requires registrants to commit to positive environmental impact, which aligns with Nura's mission of reducing e-waste by extending device lifespans.
