Original: Pinterest launches an experimental AI shopping app called ‘Ask Pinterest’
Why This Matters
Reflects intensifying competition among major platforms in AI-powered shopping as Google, ChatGPT, Meta, and Shopify develop similar agentic shopping capabilities.
Pinterest launched Ask Pinterest, an experimental AI-powered shopping app using conversational AI for product discovery. The app leverages Pinterest's Taste Graph data and will initially be available in limited access, allowing users to ask natural language questions for personalized recommendations.
Pinterest announced Ask Pinterest on Wednesday, an experimental application designed to explore conversational shopping and product discovery through a chatbot-like interface. The app uses Pinterest's internal Taste Graph—its data mapping system connecting people to their interests and aesthetics—to provide personalized recommendations. Users can pose natural language questions for inspiration on complex, multi-step queries such as planning dinner parties or furnishing rooms over time. The app retains user context across sessions and can leverage saved Pins and Boards for customization. Pinterest positioned Ask Pinterest as a standalone experimental platform to test AI shopping features without disrupting its main app experience. The launch coincides with other AI initiatives including Pinterest Model Context Protocol (MCP) for advertisers and new AI ad tools. Pinterest also introduced an AI assistant in beta for its Ads Manager in the United States and a Performance+ creative model globally to help advertisers select optimal ad creatives. The announcement comes ahead of the Cannes Lions industry gathering, focused on AI applications for advertisers and marketers.
