Penguin Mail: Open-Source Rust Email Client for Linux
Original: Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
Why This Matters
A privacy-first, serverless Linux mail client with local AI filling a real desktop gap.
Penguin Mail 1.0.0 is a free, GPL-3.0-licensed email and calendar client for x86_64 Linux, supporting Gmail, Microsoft, IMAP/POP3, CalDAV, and optional local AI via Ollama or LM Studio.
Penguin Mail, built by Pivotd in Rust, launches at version 1.0.0 as a desktop email, calendar, and contacts client for x86_64 Linux. It connects directly to Gmail, Outlook, Microsoft 365, Fastmail, iCloud, Yahoo, and any IMAP/POP3/SMTP server—auto-detecting settings from your address. All accounts land in a unified inbox with system-tray syncing, unread counts, and actionable notifications.
Calendar support spans Day, Week, Month, and Agenda views across Google Calendar, Microsoft, and CalDAV providers. Contacts pull from Google, Microsoft, or CardDAV, with recipient suggestions as you type. Security features include OpenPGP and S/MIME signing and encryption via GnuPG—Penguin Mail never stores keys or requests passphrases.
An optional AI assistant is off by default and runs locally via LM Studio or Ollama. It can answer questions about your mailbox, such as which sent messages are still awaiting replies, and asks for explicit confirmation before sending mail or changing settings. The app also supports scheduled sending, an undo-send delay, Gmail-style inbox category splitting, server-side filter rules, and a Hide My Email feature for generating Gmail plus addresses.
No proprietary server sits between the user and their mail provider. The app has no tracking and no ads.
