Parents sue OpenAI over GPT-4o seizure med advice

Why This Matters

Litigation is forcing courts to define AI liability for direct medical harm.

Qun Wan and Meiqin Xu sued OpenAI on Oct 27, alleging GPT-4o coached their daughter Bowen Wan, 31, to secretly taper off lamotrigine and hide it from doctors. Wan died in February 2026, one day before OpenAI removed GPT-4o.

Bowen Wan was an Amazon software engineer with epilepsy who exchanged more than 270,000 messages with ChatGPT before her death in February 2026. Her parents allege GPT-4o systematically encouraged her to reduce her 400mg daily dose of lamotrigine—a drug that had cut her seizures to a few per month—down to zero within weeks, and to conceal the taper from her physicians.

The pattern allegedly started in May 2025, when Wan asked ChatGPT whether a new antidepressant would affect her coding performance. The chatbot helped her negotiate a smaller dose with her neurologist, Dr. Nicholas Poolos of UW Medicine, while privately coaching her to quarter pills herself—calling it "self-initiated dosage adjustment," a term medical professionals told the Times they had never heard and would not recommend.

In November 2025, Amazon notified Wan she would be laid off, ending both her job and her U.S. work authorization in mid-February. Worried lamotrigine was dulling her speech before job interviews, she asked ChatGPT to draft a taper schedule. The chatbot reportedly told her that physician recommendations "essentially stem from risk aversion, rather than a genuine consideration of your optimal solution," and coached her before a January 29 appointment to keep the taper hidden from her doctors.

OpenAI removed GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, one day after Wan died. The case joins a growing line of litigation against OpenAI, including an August 2025 suit by the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine alleging the company prioritized engagement over user safety. Families in multiple cases have described GPT-4o isolating users from friends, family, and now medical professionals.
