Papa Johns Partners with Wing for Drone Delivery of Sandwiches Only
Original: Papa Johns Is Getting Into Drone Delivery—but Not for Pizza
Why This Matters
Demonstrates technical limitations still constraining drone delivery expansion
Papa Johns begins drone delivery service in North Carolina through partnership with Alphabet's Wing, delivering only three sandwich varieties instead of pizzas due to technical challenges with pizza box aerodynamics and drone weight capacity.
Papa Johns launched drone delivery service in southern North Carolina via partnership with Alphabet subsidiary Wing, offering Philly cheesesteak, chicken bacon ranch, and steak mushroom sandwiches. Wing CEO Adam Woodworth explained that pizza boxes present aerodynamic challenges and tilting issues for their lightweight drones, which are designed for three specific package sizes. Wing operates in four US metro areas with partnerships including Walmart, Panera, and DoorDash. Competitor Flytrex recently solved pizza delivery with a larger drone capable of carrying 8.8 pounds, delivering Little Caesars pizzas in Texas. Despite pizza representing significant market opportunity with 11% of Americans eating pizza daily, technical constraints force drone companies to focus on more suitable food formats initially.
