OpenTTD 16.0-Beta1 Released with Major Features
Original: OpenTTD 16.0-Beta1
Why This Matters
Beta testing phase enables community feedback before stable release, ensuring quality game mechanics and user experience improvements.
OpenTTD released version 16.0-beta1 on June 25, 2026, introducing trains that drive backwards, improved map generation, multiplayer enhancements, and NewGRF collection management. The development team opened competition for designing the title game.
OpenTTD 16.0-beta1 is now available for testing, introducing several significant gameplay and interface improvements. Key new features include backward-driving trains, allowing multiplayer companies to accept any player without invitations, and enhanced map generation with rocks on desert tiles, improved coastal layouts near map edges, better lighthouse placement on large maps, transmitters spawning only after 1920, and customizable average land height controls. The update adds NewGRF collection creation in picker windows for objects, stations, and houses; adjustable cargo payment aging rates for slow vehicles on large maps; text filtering in dropdown lists; and consolidated vehicle preview offers into a single window instead of multiple notifications. The OpenTTD 16 Title Game Competition was launched on TT-Forums, allowing the community to design and vote on the game displayed behind the main menu, following the community-creation model that produced the current Toyland title game. Users encountering bugs are encouraged to report them through the official bug tracker.
