Why This Matters

Simo's exit reshapes OpenAI's leadership structure as the company consolidates products ahead of its planned IPO.

OpenAI's CEO of AGI Deployment, Fidji Simo, is leaving her full-time role and transitioning to part-time adviser status after a monthslong medical leave due to a worsening neuroimmune condition called POTS, diagnosed in 2019.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's chief executive of AGI deployment, announced on July 9, 2026 that she is stepping down from her full-time role and will serve as a part-time adviser. In a post on X, Simo cited a 'severe exacerbation' of a chronic neuroimmune condition—postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS)—that forced her onto medical leave roughly three months prior. She stated that 'the road to recovery would be much longer and more complex than anticipated.' Simo joined OpenAI's board in March 2024 and was later hired by CEO Sam Altman to oversee product and business operations, allowing Altman to concentrate on research and data center expansion. She previously served as CEO of Instacart and head of the Facebook app at Meta. Her departure is part of a broader executive restructuring: former COO Brad Lightcap shifted to special projects, and president Greg Brockman assumed product strategy oversight. OpenAI has since reorganized product teams under Thibault Sottiaux and is consolidating offerings—including ChatGPT, its AI browser, and coding agent—into a 'superapp' ahead of a planned 2027 IPO targeting a $1 trillion valuation.
