Why This Matters

Signals OpenAI's strategic pivot to focus on core products amid executive turnover and IPO prep

Kevin Weil, OpenAI's former chief product officer who led AI science application Prism, departed the company on Friday. OpenAI is shutting down Prism and folding its 10-person team into Codex under broader product strategy unification efforts.

Kevin Weil, former Instagram VP who joined OpenAI in June 2024 as chief product officer, left the company Friday as OpenAI disbanded its science initiative. Weil had been leading OpenAI for Science and developing Prism, a web app launched in January to help scientists work with AI. The company is sunsetting Prism and moving its roughly 10-person team under Codex head Thibault Sottiaux, aiming to integrate Prism's capabilities into the desktop Codex app. OpenAI confirmed this is part of efforts to unify business and product strategy, focusing on key areas like enterprise offerings and coding amid competition from Anthropic and IPO preparations. Two other executives also announced departures Friday: CTO of enterprise applications Srinivas Narayanan and Sora head Bill Peebles. The moves follow recent executive reshuffling including CEO of AGI deployment Fidji Simo's medical leave and other leadership changes as the company streamlines operations.
