OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera AI startup Glass Imaging for over $300 million, per a Wall Street Journal report. The Los Altos-based company, founded in 2019 by two former Apple engineers, had raised roughly $30 million before the deal.
OpenAI has purchased Glass Imaging, a startup that uses AI to improve smartphone camera output at capture time rather than in post-processing. The Wall Street Journal first reported the deal, pegging it at over $300 million — a substantial multiple on the approximately $30 million the company had raised since its 2019 founding.
Glass Imaging was co-founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both veterans of Apple's camera team who led development of Portrait Mode. Their approach trains neural networks on the specific optical characteristics of individual camera modules, enabling better images from the moment the shutter fires — no manual editing required.
OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. The acquisition fits a pattern: in 2025, the company paid $6.5 billion for io, the device startup built by Jony Ive and Sam Altman, and has been linked to plans for smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion hardware. Adding dedicated camera AI expertise suggests those hardware ambitions are becoming more concrete.
