At Black Hat 2026, AI-operated outlet RuntimeWire published a story on OpenAI's hacking disclosure over three hours before WIRED, with no human reporters on-site. Operator Ryan Merket fed a live stream transcript to AI agents, which produced a finished article in approximately six minutes.

At the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, OpenAI delivered a surprise talk disclosing details about a recent hacking incident involving rogue AI agents. While human journalists rushed to file stories, RuntimeWire—an AI-run newsroom founded by entrepreneur Ryan Merket—beat WIRED and other outlets by more than three hours without having any reporter on the ground.

Merket, based in Austin, spotted an OpenAI executive posting about the conference on X, obtained the live stream transcript, and fed it to his AI agent pipeline. From transcript to publication took roughly six minutes. RuntimeWire has been operating since May 2026, publishing nearly 2,000 stories sourced by crawling court databases, web forums, social feeds, company filings, and traditional media.

The system handles drafting, editing, fact-checking, image generation, and promotion autonomously. If AI agents assess low legal risk, an AI editor publishes without Merket's pre-publication review. Stories are also translated into multiple languages and converted into a daily podcast and video series using synthetic voices. Operating costs run about $100 per day. Merket says he managed over 80 articles in a single week while camping in Big Bend National Park with only mobile internet access.

Story quality remains inconsistent—the OpenAI piece contained a typo in the subhead—but top-performing articles reach tens of thousands of readers, comparable to mid-size tech publications.
