Zulfi Alam, Microsoft's corporate vice president of quantum, has publicly stated he is unconcerned by scientific skepticism surrounding the company's Majorana quasiparticle research. When Microsoft claimed last year to have split an electron into Majorana quasiparticles — a key step in its quantum computing strategy — independent scientists raised doubts, citing inconclusive data and the absence of peer-reviewed analysis for many results. Alam told WIRED, 'I don't really care.' He justified withholding raw data by citing commercial sensitivity, and dismissed the peer-review process as too slow, noting that a paper published in Nature in June was based on work completed two years earlier. 'The world has changed in two years, so this notion of having peer reviews and publications doesn't work in this fast-moving world right now,' Alam said. Microsoft's Majorana program has a troubled history: in 2021, the company retracted a Nature paper on Majorana evidence after independent physicists identified data analysis flaws. In June 2026, Microsoft announced a qubit 1,000 times more reliable than its predecessor, developed with an AI research agent, but scientists continue to question the underlying Majorana science. Physicist Trevor Lanting of D-Wave Quantum pushed back, stating the field has sufficient external experts capable of evaluating such claims.
