Amazon has blocked Meta's AI assistant Muse from completing purchases on its platform. Users attempting to buy goods via Muse on Sunday night received an error stating that 'continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use.' Meta's Muse is now effectively locked out of one of the world's largest e-commerce sites.
Starting Sunday night, users of Meta's AI assistant Muse encountered a blunt error when attempting to shop on Amazon through the agent: 'Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.' The block was first spotted by GeekWire. The move cuts off Muse from one of the internet's dominant retail destinations, forcing any would-be shopper to find an alternative route.
The rivalry angle is hard to ignore. Amazon operates its own suite of foundation models and runs one of the most widely used inference platforms online — giving it little incentive to roll out the welcome mat for a competitor's agent. But the decision may also reflect genuine operational caution. If Muse places a bad order, Amazon shoulders the cleanup: handling disputes with both customers and vendors. Muse does post one of the lower hallucination rates among current AI models, but 'lower' is still not zero. Amazon may simply prefer to wait a few more release cycles before committing to agent-driven commerce on its platform.
