Why This Matters

Major automaker reversal reflects industry-wide customer preference for physical controls over touch-only interfaces

Mercedes-Benz joins growing list of manufacturers reversing course on touch-only controls after customer feedback. The German automaker will incorporate physical buttons for key functions in upcoming GLC and C-Class models while retaining large infotainment screens.

Mercedes-Benz Sales boss Mathias Geisen confirmed the brand changed direction after customers complained about touch-sensitive controls two years ago, stating 'guys, nice idea, but it just doesn't work for us'. The upcoming GLC and C-Class will feature the 39.1-inch MBUX 'Hyperscreen' covering nearly the entire dashboard width, but will include physical buttons in front of dual wireless chargers and on the steering wheel. Unlike Audi and Volkswagen which reduced screen sizes, Mercedes maintains large displays while adding requested physical controls. Geisen emphasized customers love big screens but want direct access to specific functions through hard keys. The brand will also offer customizable wallpapers for the nearly meter-wide touchscreen to mirror smartphone experiences.
