NYC Mayor Bans Undisclosed AI Images in Rental Listings
Original: Mayor Mamdani Says Landlords Can't Use AI Images to Advertise
Why This Matters
Sets a regulatory precedent for mandatory AI disclosure in commercial real estate advertising.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a 'Rental Ripoff Report' on July 16, 2026, recommending that landlords and realtors be required to disclose any use of AI-generated or AI-edited images in rental listings, as part of broader tenant protection measures.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani released the 'Rental Ripoff Report,' which outlines a series of recommendations targeting deceptive landlord practices, including the undisclosed use of AI-altered imagery in rental listings. The report follows Rental Ripoff Hearings held across all five boroughs, during which Mamdani met with approximately 2,400 New Yorkers. Residents reported issues including untreated mold, unaddressed pest infestations, and unexplained fees. The report calls for landlords to 'disclose when rental listings have been altered using artificial intelligence or other digital tools.' Additional recommendations include recognizing tenant unions and expanding tenants' bargaining rights. 'From requiring disclosure of AI-altered listings to bringing our code enforcement systems into the 21st century and finally recognizing tenant unions, we are making it clear that every New Yorker deserves a safe home,' Mamdani stated. Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning Leila Bozorg noted the policies are 'rooted in real experiences.' The AI disclosure requirement addresses a growing national problem of misleading property imagery, particularly affecting tenants who must sign leases remotely.
