Lucid Motors has delayed its most affordable EV, the Cosmos crossover SUV, by nearly a full year to H2 2027. The vehicle had been expected to launch soon at under $50,000, representing Lucid's bid to move beyond its niche, high-end customer base. CEO Silvio Napoli, who officially took over on June 1, announced the delay during the company's Q2 earnings call, stating the company had 'missed commitments, launched products before they were ready, underinvested in service, responded too slowly to quality issues, and allowed complexity to slow decisions down.' The Cosmos is the first vehicle planned for Lucid's next-generation mid-size EV platform, designed to be smaller and cheaper to manufacture. Napoli is pursuing $1.4 billion in cost savings by year-end, has overhauled the C-suite, cut 18% of the workforce in June following an earlier 12% layoff, and canceled a second shift at Lucid's Arizona factory due to lower-than-expected demand. The company's Gravity SUV has also underperformed expectations despite being a more popular form factor than its debut Air sedan.
