Jack Dorsey-backed Vine reboot Divine launches publicly
Original: Jack Dorsey-backed Vine reboot Divine launches to the public
Why This Matters
Represents attempt to revive short-form video format that preceded TikTok dominance
Divine, a Vine reboot funded by Jack Dorsey's nonprofit 'and Other Stuff', launched publicly on App Store and Google Play. The app features 500,000 restored Vine videos from nearly 100,000 creators and allows new six-second video creation.
Divine, developed by early X employee Evan Henshaw-Plath, launched publicly after testing since November with 100,000 videos initially. The app restored Vine's archive using data from the Archive Team community project, which had backed up content in 40-50GB binary files. Henshaw-Plath wrote big data scripts to reconstruct videos and associated engagement data like views and comments. The project attracted early Vine creators including Lele Pons, JimmyHere, and MightyDuck. Dorsey's backing through his May 2025 nonprofit aims to fund experimental open source social media projects, not for profit but to correct his earlier decision to shut down Vine as X CEO.
