As Meta, Google, Samsung, and Apple invest in AI-enabled smart glasses with cameras and audio recording, privacy concerns are intensifying. Meta has sold tens of millions of units, but controversies including a hidden face-recognition feature and bypassable indicator lights have fueled industry-wide debate over surveillance risks.

The smart glasses market is booming, with major tech companies racing to release camera-equipped, AI-powered wearables. Meta leads the space, having sold tens of millions of units, but faces persistent criticism over privacy. Its glasses can capture images, audio, and video of bystanders, and while an indicator light signals recording, some users have found ways to disable it. Meta later added anti-tamper features in response. A more serious concern emerged when WIRED reported that Meta had quietly developed a face-recognition feature called 'Name Tag' within its app. Meta subsequently deleted the code; CTO Andrew Bosworth confirmed its existence on The Atlantic's podcast. Google and Samsung are expected to launch their own smart glasses later in 2025, and Apple is reportedly targeting 2027, with production reportedly delayed to address privacy issues. Smaller competitors are attempting to differentiate: Even Realities sells camera-free smart glasses, while Solos offers a removable privacy shield over camera lenses. Legitimate use cases — including accessibility tools like real-time captioning and a Meta partnership with Be My Eyes for visually impaired users — continue to drive adoption despite concerns. Vuzix VP Matt Margolis noted that the privacy debate itself signals how close the industry is to mainstream adoption.
