Herdr, a terminal-based runtime for managing AI coding agents, has announced its acceptance into Y Combinator's F26 batch. The project was built entirely by a single developer, known as Can, who began building it four months ago while reconsidering his career direction. The core idea: agents should run in persistent terminal panes organized by project, accessible from any machine, including remote VPS instances via SSH. The TUI (terminal user interface) is bundled with the tool, allowing users to spin up an agent session with a single command. Since its launch, Herdr has attracted over 25,000 GitHub stars, 340,000 downloads, and more than 500 community-built plugins within one month of the marketplace launch — including a Raycast extension, a Stream Deck integration, and an iOS client. Can recently switched the license from AGPL to Apache-2.0 to enable unrestricted use. With Y Combinator backing, he plans to build a small team focused on runtime stability, extensibility, and multi-client support, including connected machine management across laptops, VPS instances, and sandboxes. The open runtime will remain free.
