HackerRank's Chakra AI Interviewer Goes Live

Why This Matters
AI-evaluated hiring could reshape how millions of tech roles are filled globally.
HackerRank launched Chakra, an AI agent that conducts, observes, and evaluates job interviews, to general availability on Oct. 6, 2026, after 500,000+ beta interviews with clients including Snowflake and Capgemini.
HackerRank's Chakra collapses what used to be a three-stage hiring process — recruiter screen, take-home assessment, and engineer interview — into a single AI-conducted session. Candidates work inside a canvas environment with real-world code repositories and an embedded AI assistant. Chakra watches the process, not just the outcome, and can interject with follow-up questions: why did you choose that approach? What changes if a new constraint appears?
CEO Vivek Ravisankar put the shift bluntly: "The previous modality of evaluation was evaluating the output. Now, because of AI, anybody can produce an artifact." The platform's answer is to measure what it calls "AI fluency" — how well a candidate frames a problem for an AI tool, interprets its output, and steers toward a working solution — alongside traditional signals like critical thinking.
Chakra spent roughly six months in beta, accumulating over 500,000 interviews. Snowflake, Snorkel, and Capgemini were among the testers, and HackerRank used it internally as well. The product becomes generally available to all customers starting Monday. Notably, allowing AI access during the interview is a deliberate design choice, not a loophole — the company argues that in a world where AI is part of daily engineering work, measuring how candidates use it is more relevant than measuring whether they can avoid it.
