Robotics startup Gritt exited stealth on July 21, 2026, announcing a $26M Series A led by Obvious Ventures, bringing total funding to $34M. The Carnegie Mellon-founded company uses AI-controlled off-the-shelf robots to accelerate solar panel installation, claiming a 3–4x productivity boost over human crews alone.
Gritt, founded by CMU-trained roboticists CEO Puneet Puri and CTO Vishal Dugar, publicly launched Tuesday with a $26 million Series A round led by Obvious Ventures, with participation from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investment. Earlier seed funding from First Round Capital, Climactic, Congruent Ventures, and VSC Ventures brings the company's total raise to $34 million.
Rather than building proprietary hardware, Gritt deploys AI software on rented off-the-shelf equipment—including skidders and robotic arms from Kawasaki—to automate solar panel handling on construction sites. Its systems unload large glass panels, transport them to metal frames, and position them with sub-millimeter accuracy for human workers to fasten.
Puri told TechCrunch that a typical eight-person crew installs roughly 800 panels per day, while the same crew working alongside Gritt's robots can install 3,000 to 4,000 panels daily. The company currently has two systems deployed in the field and aims to operate 48 systems within six months. Gritt says it is contracted to support 2.8 gigawatts of solar installations over the next 18 months, with customers including three of the top 10 U.S. power construction companies. The company's longer-term goal is to generalize its AI platform to broader infrastructure construction.
