Google DeepMind has launched AlphaGenome Atlas, a tool that maps how genetic mutations impact molecular biology across the human genome. According to the announcement authored by VP of Science Pushmeet Kohli and Genomics Initiative Lead Žiga Avsec, scientists have long understood the roughly 2% of the human genome that codes for proteins, but the remaining 98% — non-coding DNA — has remained largely unexplored. The earlier AlphaGenome model demonstrated how single changes in non-coding regions can disrupt molecular processes such as protein production. AlphaGenome Atlas builds on that foundation, offering what DeepMind describes as the most comprehensive catalogue of mutation effects to date. The release aims to give researchers a high-resolution, genome-wide view of how DNA variants influence biological function, potentially accelerating the understanding of genetic disease and regulatory mechanisms in human DNA.
