Google Launches Agentic Gemini for Enterprise First

Original: Google brings agentic AI to Gemini, starting with businesses

Why This Matters

Agentic AI in enterprise sets the template for how AI moves from assistant to autonomous worker.

Google unveiled an agentic Gemini AI at a Cloud event on Oct. 8, 2026, targeting businesses before consumers. The agent handles multi-step tasks autonomously, connects to enterprise systems, and supports third-party models including Anthropic's Claude.

At a Google Cloud event, Google announced a unified agentic version of Gemini that moves beyond Q&A to independently execute complex, multi-step tasks on behalf of users. CEO Sundar Pichai opened by citing Gemini's scale: over 1 billion monthly active users, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies already using Gemini Enterprise. That footprint is precisely why Google is starting with businesses—Pichai said it lets the company work through the harder problems around security, scale, and performance before a consumer rollout.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the shift as giving the agent "objectives, not just instructions." The agent plans its own work, selects appropriate tools and subagents, and connects directly to enterprise systems including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, and Postgres. It also supports any Model Context Protocol (MCP) server inside or outside a company's network.

By default, the agent selects the best model for each task, but users can manually choose—including Anthropic's Claude models from launch, with open-source and additional private models coming later. A "tasks inbox" lets users monitor the agent's reasoning, subagent delegation, and progress in real time. Notably, the agent gets its own Workspace account—a dedicated email address with full organizational context, effectively functioning as a digital co-worker.
