A Productrise data study tracking 2M+ product listings across 100,000+ SERPs over 23 days (Aug 9–31, 2026) found that matched products appearing in both Google AI Mode and traditional search were priced 21.6% higher on average in AI Mode.
Productrise tracked over 2 million product listings across more than 100,000 SERPs and AI Mode responses over 23 days in August 2026. Researchers ran identical shopping queries through both Google AI Mode and traditional search simultaneously, then compared prices when the exact same product appeared in both results.
Key findings: matched products in AI Mode were 21.6% more expensive on average. When looking at all products across both surfaces (not just matched pairs), AI Mode listings sat 49% higher than traditional search listings. Only 1.28% of products ranking in traditional search also appeared in AI Mode for the same query on the same day. Among matched products, 38.1% showed a price discrepancy; of those, AI Mode was more expensive 68.4% of the time. Additionally, the primary listed seller differed on 49.6% of matched products.
Independent SEO consultant Brodie Clark noted the study reveals inconsistencies in Google's Shopping Graph between classic search and AI Mode for free listing placements, adding that price appears to receive less weighting in AI Mode recommendations than expected. The study raises questions about whether AI-powered shopping search genuinely helps consumers find the best prices, or whether it surfaces higher-priced inventory by default.
