The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has released a report coining the term 'Slop Jihad' to describe a growing trend in which supporters of Islamic terror groups like ISIS and al-Qaida use generative AI tools to produce cartoons, memes, and fan edits that glorify terrorism in entertainment-friendly formats. One notable example is a TikTok video recreating a historic ISIS execution as a SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon. Adam Hadley, executive director of UN-backed Tech Against Terrorism, warns that 'highly stylized AI-generated content can make violent Islamist extremist material more accessible to younger audiences while reducing the visibility of conventional terrorist branding.' ISD research chair Moustafa Ayad notes the trend is 'still growing and has not peaked.' Islamic terror groups have a documented history of adapting to new media — in 2024, the ISIS-affiliated News Harvest began using AI-generated news anchors. The latest shift goes further, with one TikTok account converting ISIS's weekly al-Naba newsletter into anime. The trend has prompted internal pushback from traditional supporters who distrust creators they view as not being 'true believers,' though some traditional propaganda accounts are also sharing the new AI-generated content.
