TikTok's Super App Push: Guides, Payments, and More
Original: From restaurant guides to payments, here’s how TikTok is building a super app
Why This Matters
Super app consolidation could redraw how Western users spend time and money online.
TikTok is expanding beyond video with a restaurant guide called 'Must Eat,' a peer-to-peer payments feature via DMs, and ongoing fintech filings — all pointing to a WeChat-style super app strategy outside China.
TikTok announced 'Must Eat' this week, a community-driven restaurant guide pulling from over 40 million posts and comments. Users can filter by city, cuisine, price, and rating — putting TikTok in direct competition with Yelp and Google Maps. It's the latest in a string of expansions that includes TikTok Shop, local discovery maps, enhanced search, and in-app games.
On the payments front, Bloomberg reported in August that TikTok is building a peer-to-peer money transfer feature for direct messages, built on its existing TikTok Pay infrastructure already live in Southeast Asia. Reuters separately reported in March that TikTok applied to Brazil's central bank to operate as a fintech company offering lending and payment services.
The strategy tracks closely with the super app model dominant in China — WeChat being the benchmark, combining messaging, payments, and commerce in one place. Whether that model translates to Western markets remains an open question. TikTok, which transitioned to primarily U.S. ownership in January 2026, is clearly betting it can.
