Facebook adds natural-language algorithm controls

Original: Facebook is giving users more control over their algorithm

Why This Matters

Direct algorithmic control signals a wider industry pivot away from opaque, passive recommendation systems.

Meta launched 'Your Algorithm' on Facebook on Oct. 13, 2026, letting users shape Feed and Reels recommendations via plain-text prompts. Changes apply in real time. Feature first debuted on Instagram in June 2026.

Meta has rolled out 'Your Algorithm' to Facebook, an AI-powered tool that lets users describe in plain language what content they want to see more or less of in their Feed and Reels. The feature was first introduced on Instagram in June 2026—after a narrower Reels-only launch in December 2025—and is now expanding to Facebook proper.

Rather than relying solely on passive behavioral signals, users can actively prompt the algorithm. Facebook may respond with follow-up questions to sharpen its understanding of a user's preferences, and any changes take effect in real time. Meta also updated Facebook's three-dot post menu, adding quick shortcuts to 'Your Algorithm,' 'Interested,' and 'Not interested' options directly from individual posts.

Threads has a similar feature called 'Dear Algo.' The broader push brings Meta's platforms closer to how streaming services like Netflix handle personalization—explicit user input layered over automated recommendations. Meta framed the launch as giving people more meaningful influence over their experience as AI plays a growing role in content discovery.
