Apple is fighting back against generative AI rivals by rebranding and overhauling its assistant as 'Siri AI' with the launch of iOS 27. Originally debuting in 2011, Siri now faces stiff competition from Google Assistant, ChatGPT, and others. The revamped assistant targets iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and later models — including the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo — which carry the necessary on-device silicon.
Key new capabilities include deep personal context indexing: Siri AI scans texts, emails, calendars, photos, and videos entirely on-device, with no data sent to Apple. Users can ask natural questions like 'What day is my work appraisal?' and receive accurate, personalized answers.
Siri AI also gains real-time screen awareness, allowing users to ask about content visible in Safari, Settings, the App Store, or the Camera app — without needing a screenshot. A new camera mode lets users point their phone at real-world objects and ask questions, such as reading nutritional information from a menu.
Finally, Siri AI can write and edit text natively — no ChatGPT plug-in required. Users can dictate messages, adjust tone (formal or casual), expand or condense text, and approve the final output before sending.
