Co-founders CEO Charlie Horowitz and CTO Tyler Presser aim to build a constellation of approximately 20 laser-equipped satellites capable of providing dedicated intercontinental data links from orbit, targeting an initial throughput of 2.4 terabits per second — far exceeding existing space-to-ground optical demonstrations, which have achieved roughly 2.5 Gbps.
The company targets routes that are underserved or expensive, such as France-to-Australia or Africa-to-South America, where undersea fiber infrastructure is limited. EON plans to sell dedicated capacity to hyperscalers and AI labs, offering full control over data transit.
A key technical challenge is atmospheric distortion and cloud interference. EON's mitigation strategy includes placing ground stations in multiple regions, using redundant sites, and leveraging weather data to maintain link reliability. The seed funding will be used to establish an optics lab, hire engineers, and conduct ground tests. A demonstration satellite is targeted for launch around end of 2027, with Horowitz stating it aims to deliver at least 800 Gbps — and potentially 1 Tbps — of optical downlink throughput, which would represent the highest yet recorded.
